Ann Inett, Convict, Lady Penrhyn 1788

Ann Inett was born  1756 Grimley, Worcester, England. Trade: Dressmaker. Crime: Break, enter and steal 1 petticoat with force of arms. Tried: Worcester 11 Mar 1786. Sentence: Death commuted to 7 years transportation. Ann left behind in Worcestershire her two children (possible illegitimate) Thomas aged nine years and Constance, aged six years.

In the middle of February 1788, Lieutenant King of HMS Sirius, a master’s mate, and surgeon’s mate, with four other men from HMS Sirius, together with a few men and women convicts including Ann Inett, embarked on board HM Supply, and travelled to Norfolk Island, to established the settlement.

Each year on 6 Mar, Norfolk Island celebrates Foundation Day, which is a Norfolk Island public holiday, the day in 1788 when Lt Philip Gidley King landed on Norfolk Island to establish the first European settlement on Norfolk Island.

Ann upon arrival was soon in a relationship with Phillip Gidley King Commandant Norfolk Island. Their son Norfolk King was the first child born on Norfolk Island, on 8 Jan 1789.

A pregnant Ann and her infant son Norfolk King travelled to Sydney Cove aboard HM Supply, in Mar 1790 arriving at Port Jackson 6 Apr 1790. Norfolk name appears on HM Supply muster as Norfolk King Inett. Travelling with them was also Phillip Gidley King, who stayed aboard and travelled onto England via Batavia arriving back in England in Dec 1790.

Ann stayed behind in the colony, giving birth to their second son, Sydney King sometime between Apr 1790 and July 1790. Her two sons Norfolk and Sydney were eventually raised by Phillip Gidley King and his wife Anna.

Ann Inett married Richard John ROBINSON, 18 Nov 1792 St Johns Parramatta. The witnesses were Luke Jones and Elizabeth Dougal.

In March 1820, Richard and Ann left the Colony on board the Admiral Cockburn for England.

 Children of Phillip Gidley King and Ann Inett:

  1. Norfolk KING, born 8 Jan 1789 Norfolk Island, the first child born on Norfolk Island.
  2. Sydney KING, born 1790 Sydney. Sydney King Inett was baptised 9 July 1790 St Phillips Sydney, son of Philip Gidley King, Late Commandant Norfolk Island and Ann Inett, Convict.
