John Arndell, free, Marquis of Cornwallis 1796

John Arndell was born in London to Dr. Thomas Arndell and his first wife Susanna on 11 December 1781 London. he was baptized 5 Apr 1772 Saint Stephan Coleman Street London.

His father Thomas Arndell arrived in NSW with the First Fleet as assistant surgeon aboard the Friendship in 1788.

John remained in England for medical training. He arrived in NSW aboard Marquis of Cornwallis in Feb 1796. John was appointed as the assistant to the surgeon on Norfolk Island.  He arrived on Norfolk Island aboard HM Supply in April 1796. Also on board the HM Supply in April 1796 was Elisabeth Jackson, Convict, Marquis of Cornwallis 1796.[1] Governor Hunter wrote to Lieutenant-Governor King on 22 March 1796 informing him that Thomas Arndell, son of Thomas was being sent to Norfolk Island to assist at Hospital, King replied to Hunter on 10 April 1796.[2]

He is listed in the Norfolk Island 1792 – 1796 victualling book as John Arndel, surgeon. John Arndell returned to NSW aboard the Francis in July 1796.

As John Arnel of Parramatta he married Maria Hensley (Convict, Indispensible  1796) 17 Apr 1797, St Johns Parramatta.  Also on that day their daughter Esther Arnel, born 9 Mar 1797 was baptised at St Johns Parramatta, Esther Arndell married John Tunks 27 Mar 1815 Castlereagh Church.

John Arndell is said to have died in 1805 in NSW, a drowning at the Hawkesbury, no evidence can be located to confirm this.

With the thanks to research of Barbara Parker, John Arndell returned to England and married a Jane Potter in 1800 and he died 1807 at St Marylebone, Westminster, London.  John Arnold married Jane Potter 20 Nov 1800, Cranley, Surrey, England.  John Ardnell’s estate was claimed by his wife Jane Ardnell in Nov 1807. By August 1806 Elizabeth Jackson is recorded as free by servitude, wife of Richard Evans. Elizabeth Jackson died Windsor Poor House, November 1837, buried at Matthews Windsor.

Samuel ARNDELL, born Samuel Arnold, c1797 Norfolk Island, son of John ARNOLD and Elizabeth JACKSON. He married Elizabeth Dring 5 September 1847 Colo NSW (her fifth relationship). They had been living together from April 1817. They lived at Sackville Reach and Portland Head and raised a large family. Elizabeth DRING, born 30 August 1794 Norfolk Island. She is listed as Elizabeth Forbus in the Norfolk Island 1792 – 1796 Victualling book, with no birth year and departing Norfolk Island 6 November 1794, thus leaving Norfolk Island with her parents aboard the Daedalus. Her birth date and place of 30 August 1794 Norfolk Island is recorded on her baptism certificate when she was baptised 7 December 1794 St Phillips as daughter of William Dring and Ann Dring (nee Forbes). Samuel Arnold died of a stroke, pauper, 13 January 1874 Wilberforce, buried Windsor.

Robert Jackson ARNDELL, born 1798 Windsor, son Elizabeth JACKSON, married Jane FORBES – DRING – HUXLEY, born 24 August 1798 Sydney, she was baptised 30 September 1798 St Phillips Sydney as daughter of Thomas Jones & Ann Dring. Jane Huxley married Robert Jackson ARNDELL, 24 November 1817 St Mathews Windsor. Robert also used the surname of Jackson and Evans. So he may be the child of Richard Evans.

So the two Arndell brothers married half-sisters Elizabeth Dring and Jane Huxley. Their brother Thomas HUXLEY, born 1801 Hawkesbury married Mary EVANS, born 23 June 1806 Lower Portland Head, baptised 23 March 1817 St Matthews Windsor, daughter of Richard EVANS and Elizabeth JACKSON, 10 June 1822 St Matthews Windsor.
