William was born 1771 Surry England. He enlisted into the NSW Corps on August 1789 in England, arriving in NSW aboard the Salamander 1791.
He first arrived on Norfolk Island aboard the Daedalus in Oct 1794, he left Norfolk island for Sydney aboard HM Supply in Nov 1795.
William Baker, was reported as deserting the NSW Corps in Jul 1799, but soon returned to Townson’s detachment of the NSW Corps. William Baker name appears on the HMS Reliance shipping muster from Norfolk Island to Sydney Dec 1799.
William again travelled to Norfolk Island aboard HMS Porpoise in Jan 1801 with the rank of private, in Feb 1802 on Norfolk Island he was promoted to corporal.
He returned to NSW aboard the Lady Nelson in Apr 1810, Sarah Whitfield a NSW Corps orphan also travelled in his care. Her parents were George and Sarah Whitfield who both had died on Norfolk Island. In April 1810 William Baker was transferred to the Veterans Company.
William Baker, age 50 years, bachelor of Sydney, Royal Veterans married Mary Adams, age 48 years, widow of Sydney, 11 Aug 1814.
William Baker, soldier in the NSW Veteran Corps, age 58 years died Apr 1824, buried 25 Apr 1824 St Johns Parramatta.
Mary Baker nee Chadderton – Adams, widow of Sergeant Baker married First Fleeter Benjamin Cusley, 30 August 1824 St Matthews Windsor. The witnesses were George McGinnis (Benjamin’s son in law), Ann Rose and Robert Cooper. Mary Crutchley (sic) died November 1834, Windsor, age 76 years, Windsor, wife of Benjamin Crutchly, buried 3 November 1834 St Matthews Windsor.
