Surprize August 1790 to Norfolk Island Passenger list

On 7 August 1790 the Surprize and Justinian arrived at Norfolk Island at Cascade. Provision and stores from both ships were unloaded from 9 August and continues over the next week subject to landing conditions. The convicts were first disembarked on 16 August and was completed the following day. One of the boats was overturned with two seaman of the late HMS Sirius, convicts and one child were drowned.

David Collins (who is known for stating incorrect passenger numbers on ships to and from Norfolk Island) wrote that the Surprise left Port Jackson on 1 August with 35 male convicts, 150 female convicts, two superintendents lately arrived, and one deputy commissary, Mr. Thomas Freeman, appointed such by the governor’s warrant. Wentworth, who, being desirous of some employment in this country, was now sent to Norfolk Island to act as an assistant to the surgeon there, being reputed to have the necessary requisites for such a situation.
