William Ashford, An incorrigible lad 1792

William Ashford, described in 1792 as an “incorrigible lad” dismissed from the NSW Corps, was repeatedly sent between Port Jackson and Norfolk Island after discharge and later convictions, he was ultimately sentenced to seven years’ hard labour on Norfolk Island. His later fate is uncertain, though he likely died there between 1797 and 1801.

Colonial Sentences to Norfolk Island 1789 – 1807

Norfolk Island was also a place of banishment for colonial sentences of secondary transportation and hard labour issued by authorities in NSW, namely the Court of Criminal Jurisdiction (Criminal Court), Judge Advocate’s Bench of Magistrates (Bench), and the Court of Enquires regarding the various Irish rebellions.
